Colleagues,

The MIT Museum will be hosting a book event later this month that will be of
interest to those studying computer animation. Sito is a well-known animator
and contributor to such films as The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast and
The Lion King. He help set-up Dreamworks Animation Unit and is the author of
Drawing the Line: The Untold Story of the Animation Unions from Bosko to Bart
Simpson. Some of the research from his newly released book, Moving Innovation
(MIT Press), was conducted here at the MIT Museum and we hope to show some
early clips of Ivan Sutherland demonstrating Sketchpad as part of this program.
Please share this announcement with interested individuals or organizations.

Thanks,

Debbie Douglas

>From MIT to Andy's Room, the Birth & Evolution of Computer Graphics

Book Launch and Special Guest Lecture by Tom Sito

Wednesday, September 18, 6-8 pm
MIT Museum, 265 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA

Computer graphics has changed the way we experience media today. It is the
difference between Steamboat Willie and Buzz Lightyear, between ping pong and
PONG. Professional animator and University of Southern California School of
Cinematic Arts professor Tom Sito will trace the origins of computer animation
- how the development of Sketchpad by MIT graduate student Ivan
Sutherland<http://techland.time.com/2013/04/12/a-talk-with-computer-graphics-pioneer-ivan-sutherland/>
paved the way for the use of computer animation in military research and
academia, and made possible such movies as Toy Story and Avatar. The story of
computer graphics is the story of a unique group of individuals - math nerds,
avant-garde artists, cold warriors, hippies, video gamers - disparate types
united by a common vision. Signed copies of Professor Sito’s book, Moving
Innovation: A History of Computer
Animation<http://www.amazon.com/Moving-Innovation-History-Computer-Animation/dp/0262019094>,
 will be available for purchase.
