Well, it is recently used mostly for development discussions 
about scid continued. Not sure whether anybody active here is 
still using original scid.

Well, is chessbase 9 preferred over chessbase 6? Or so...

Original scid is not developed anymore, it is frozen at some - 
still useful and stable - version. Scid continued has quite a 
few new features (full support for UCI engines is the thing most 
people spot immediately, but there are far more). You may
happen to dislike some changes, but in general it is able
to do everything original scid did, it handles the same database
format and it adds new features.

Original scid has not changed for a few years and is unlikely to 
change in the future - its original author disappeared and 
nobody was allowed to directly take over the project.

Scid continued is actively developed as you can see from change 
logs and release history.
