I'd try to compact the name file by means of maintanance:

File / Maintanance / Compact Database

There you can compact the game file (really deleting games
that are flagged as deleted) and the Name file ie. removing
player names that no longer occur in the DB.

Actually, also consider to use the default notation as

    Lastname, Firstname(s)

You can by means of the spell checking. This requires the
installation of either a ratings or spell checking file.
Currently, Franz Nagl provides recent rating files, hence if
you use them to get ELO ratings for the players in your
Reference DB e.g. this would be the way to go. A typical
line looks like this:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fischer, Robert J #gm USA [2785] 1943.03.09--2008.01.17
       %Bio World champion, 1972-1975
    = Fischer, Robert James
    = Fischer, RJ
       %Elo 1971:2740,2760 1972:?,2785
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Now you could add a block for yourself in this file

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Payne, David CA
    = davidpayne
    = DavidPayne
    = paynedavid
       % Elo 2005:3000 2006:3500 2007:4000 2008:4500
----------------------------------------------------------------------

I think you got the idea. (ELO ratings are not necessary of
course.) Now if you spellcheck the file all writings of your
name will be replaced by the normalise "Payne, David CA".

Unfortunately, scid allows only for one ratings.ssp or
spell.ssp file, that is if you use Franz' files you'll need
to add your corrections each time Franz updates the files.
You could set up a script to do this, though ;)

Additionally, you might want to check out
Options / Chessboard / My Player names

There you could set up a list of all names you use in game
play. E.g. your FICS or SchemingMind login or whatever plus
your normalised name could be added there. Then, each time a
game occurs with one of the names, scid will rotate the
board to view the game from your perspective. (Comes in very
handy if you use Scid to play correspondence chess or for
FICS e.g.)

I think it is "findable" only if you know the answer in
principle (ie. maintenance, spell checking and stuff like
that). But I admit that the ssp-files are actually not
really meant to be edited by the user in the first place but
to be distributed with scid. However, they're plain text and
beeing a bit carefull you'll not screw up something there.

Still, as I know your problem pretty well, I wished there
would be the possibility to have more than one ratings.ssp
just to be able to keep things you describe separated from
the main file.
