It wasn't a complete waste of effort to do this.  The value of  
sharedir is still substituted into the makefile, from which it can be  
used to process other files.

If this functionality were to be put back into configure, at the very  
least it shout be changed to process an arbitrary list of conf files  
in a generic way instead of hard coded as it was.
