Ah? Maybe unchecking this is the solution to my problem ;)
Should I have checked in the docs more carefully for this
hint?

I see this idea. However there's actually a difference
between "open base as tree" and "open base" and then fire up
the tree window. Intentions are different here. See also my
comment about using the tree for a sort of "incremental
search".
