Hi Pascal, I am not sure that I agree to your statement that the tree window handles "positions". Actually, I am sure it does not.
It is really moves that are listed, together with some statistics on games in which these moves were played. When you execute one of these moves, very often the overall statistics on the position you arrive at are different (because of other transpositions into the new position). I am also sure that moves that were never played in actual games but which DO transpose to positions which are in the database are not mentioned in the tree list. Another example: 1.e4 d5 Now I want to transpose asap into a basic Caro-Kann. Note that the move 2.d4 is not in the tree list at all.. 2.d4 Hm, still 8000 games saw this position before. Now the intended 2...c6 is in the list, but has statistics on only 236 games... 2... c6 Back on track, with 72000 games.... So I definitely prefer an attempt to simply prune illegal moves from the tree window. Cheers, Joost.
