Did you try Merida1 or Merida2? Those are rendered as pgn with more
colours and they look much nicer than the original Merida which is
rendered as gif in 256 colours only. (The latter gives you those edges
as you'd need more colours to smooth them.)
If you don't have Merida1 or Merida2 you'll have to install the
libtk-img package.
