K-12 programs manager

Responsibilities
The Museum of Science and Industry is seeking a manager for its K-12 
programs.  This individual will manage a number of Museum programs geared 
toward school-age children and their teachers, including curriculum 
development projects, field trip resources, school partnerships, and teacher 
professional development efforts.

Immediate responsibilities include management and development of two 
partnerships programs, SEPA and MAPS.  SEPA (Science Education Partnership 
Award) is a collaboration between the Museum of Science and Industry and 
Northwestern University's School of Education and Biomedical Engineering.  
MAPS (Museums and Public Schools) is a collaboration between Museum's in the 
Parks and the Chicago Public Schools.
 
The focus of SEPA ,  funded by the National Institutes of Health, is to 
create a middle and high school biology curriculum that will uniquely bridge 
formal classroom learning and informal science center learning.  The 
curriculum focus is on topics relevant to cutting-edge cardiovascular 
research.  Project responsibilities include co-coordinating curriculum 
development with the Northwestern coordinator and a "work circle" team of six 
teachers, and co-developing a three week professional development institute 
for teachers that is research based and technology rich.  

Additionally, the Museum K-12 programs manager will maintain a relationship 
with the partners, monitor the project budget, manage a project assistant and 
oversee program evaluation.   

MAPS is a collaboration that brings together the Chicago Public Schools and 
Museum's to create interdisciplinary curriculum and integrate museum 
resources into the classroom.  The curriculum is currently being used by 240 
teachers and is expected to expand during the 2001-2002 school year to 480 
teachers.  

The K-12 programs manager will also work with division team to conduct a 
needs assessment of the museum's K-12 audience and recommend changes in 
museum operations that will, in particular, enhance our ability to deliver 
high-quality program and resource needs of  K-12 students and their teachers. 
 Our goal is to improve the quality of every student and teacher encounter 
with the Museum.  


Qualifications
A Masters degree and prior teaching experience is preferred.  Candidates must 
be technology literate and familiar with technology as a tool in teaching and 
learning.  Candidates should have an understanding of school culture and 
knowledge of informal learning.  Teamwork, time management and both oral and 
written communication skills are a must.  Successful candidates will also 
have experience in budget management and be a self-starter with the ability 
to work independently.  Must be organized, proficient in budgeting techniques 
and familiar with research methodologies. Must exhibit enthusiasm, 
flexibility, and openness to new ideas.
