Chemists Celebrate 125 Years

       The American Chemical Society will celebrate125 years of service to
chemists during its 222nd National Meeting and Exposition Aug. 26 through 30
at McCormick Place, Chicago.
       ACS President Attila Pavlath will host a preview of a comprehensive
public awareness project, "Technology Milestones," from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Aug. 26 - 29 in McCormick Place South.  The project salutes chemistry's
technological impact on modern life over the past 125 years.  Individuals,
corporations and chemical societies submitted hundreds of nominations.  The
preview display in Chicago will feature 30 milestones, including energy
generation, cancer chemotherapy, food safety, polymer applications, and the
ability to detect and analyze chemicals.
       On Monday afternoon, Aug. 27, a symposium, "Celebrating A Century of
Chemistry," will feature four speakers discussing the state of chemistry in
the years 1901, 1926, 1951, and 1976.

Mini-Symposium Aims to Energize Local Section Volunteers

       TEI Analytical, Inc., presents the Chicagoland Science and Technology
Leadership Series
Mini-Symposium, "Beyond the Monthly Meeting:  Energizing and Activating
Local Section Volunteers," on Wednesday evening, Sept. 5, in Niles.
       Speakers include Gail A. Wiseman, Field Services Manager for the
Institute of Food Technologists; Gregory D. Cargill, Director, Illinois
Water Environment Association; and Alan Zagoria, Special Projects Chair,
American Institute of Chemical Engineers Chicago Section.  Each speaker will
share successful outreach projects that stimulate volunteer involvement.
       The mini-symposium presents an opportunity for officers and committee

members of Chicago area science and technology societies to share strategies
that best meet their members' needs.
       Registration and a light dinner will be offered beginning at 6 p.m.
at TEI Analytical, 7175 N. Austin Ave., Niles.  The program begins at 7 p.m.
A panel discussion will follow the presentations, and the program will
conclude at 9 p.m.
       Cost is $50 per person, or $45 for members of TEI(SM) Association
Management Services clients.  Space is limited to the first 25 registrants.

LC Course Registration Deadline Set

       Deadline is Aug. 20 to register for the three-day "Introductory
Course in Liquid Chromatography," which runs Sept. 10-13 at Roosevelt
University, 1400 N. Roosevelt Blvd., Schaumburg. Contact John Fitzloff at

GRANT OPPORTUNITIES

AAUW Fellowships
       Applications are available Aug. 1 for 2002-2003 American Fellowships
offered by the American Association of University Women.  American
Fellowships support women doctoral candidates completing dissertations or
scholars seeking funds for postdoctoral research leave from accredited
institutions. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence, teaching
experience, and active commitment to helping women and girls through service
in their communities, professions, or fields of research.  Application

National Science Foundation Guide to Programs
       Funding opportunities for fiscal year 2001 are available from the
National Science Foundation's Guide to Programs.  The Guide is a compilation
of funding for research and education in science, mathematics, and
engineering. It is available at http://www.nsf.gov/cgi-bin/getpub?gp.
General descriptions of NSF programs, research areas, and eligibility
information for proposal submission are provided in each chapter.

Sloan Research Fellowships in Science and Technology
       Sloan Research Fellowships in Science and Technology awards are
intended to enhance the careers of the best young faculty members in
specified fields of science. The Sloan Foundation awards 100 grants a year
in six fields: chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics,
neuroscience, and physics.  Application deadline is Sept. 15.

American-Scandinavian Foundation Fellowships
       The American-Scandinavian Foundation offers fellowships (up to
$18,000) and grants (normally $3,000) to individuals to pursue research or
study in one or more Scandinavian countries for up to one year.  Awards are
made in all fields. Application deadline is Nov. 1 for the 2002-03 year.

Humboldt Research Fellowships & Awards for Study in Germany
       The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants research fellowships and
research awards to highly qualified scholars and scientists of all
nationalities not resident in Germany, enabling them to undertake periods of
research in Germany.  Applications may be submitted for long-term research
stays of between 6 and 12 months.  Up to 600 research fellowships are
available each  year.  Applications may be submitted at any time.

Sigma Xi Grants
       Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, offers Grants-in-Aid of
Research to undergraduate or graduate students in a degree program. Awards
range from $100 to $1,000.  The next application deadline is Oct. 15.
