There has been a lot of talk about this accident on the CHEMED list. Here
is some commentary that came second hand from the relative of a person in
the class.

Regarding this accident, one of my students had a stepson who was in the
room when the accident happened. It sounds like, from her description that
the bottle of methanol was left too close to the demonstration, and a fire
resulted.

I've done this demonstration dozens of times, and never had a problem...the
alcohol doesn't burn especially hot, and when it's gone, its gone. I'll
keep doing the demo (especially with Li+), but I'll be especially careful to
set the methanol bottle well back!

It goes without saying that my heart goes out to the teacher & students
involved...
