I removed everything to do with gnome from my home directory but to no avail. The mouse cursor does not come back. Anyway, I think it is time to give up on SL for now. Thanks again for the help!! Best wishes!!

Check for dotted (.) directories in your home. I'm guessing most of them are in ~/.config , such as ~/.config/dconf. There may also be a ~/.gnome or something.
