I'm sending this email without cable, Thanks!
I'm not sure to understand what happened...
I moved my computer by ~1 meter and it worked.
Then noise still equals the signal but they are now at -47 dBm.
Also the connection seems to be unstable and sometimes the iwlist comment doesn't find anything.
Other people in the same room receive the wifi with 5/5 quality.
Could this be a hardware problem?

I just checked this on a laptop which has a ipw3945 card.
Indeed the signal level is equal to the noise level. So I would say that the value of the noise level is useless for the ipw3945.

But the "Link Quality" seems to be a real value. In your case you have 51/100, which should be ok. I have 61/100 and in my case the connection seems to be stable.

Has somebody else problem with ipw3945 on SL5?

I will check if we can update the ipw3945 driver in SL5.

To exclude a hardware problem, do you have by chance Windows installed on this Laptop? Sorry for this suggestion ;-)

Thanks again

Thanks for the quick answer
Do you see your access point, if you do a scan?

# iwlist eth1 scan

Yes! I got:

# /sbin/iwlist eth1 scan
eth1 Scan completed :
         Cell 01 - Address: 00:00:00:B5:FB:00
                   ESSID:"observatoire-portail"
                   Protocol:IEEE 802.11bg
                   Mode:Master
                   Channel:9
                   Encryption key:off
                   Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s
                             11 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s
                             48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s
Quality=51/100 Signal level=-78 dBm Noise level=-78 dBm

Your "Signal level" is equal your "Noise level"? Which is not really good.
Can you move closer to your access point?

                   Extra: Last beacon: 11192ms ago

If yes, for example use "system-config-network" to configure your wireless settings.

So I set the mode to Master and channel to 9 but then I get:
"Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Invalid argument."
"Définition des informations IP pour eth1. échoué. Aucun lien n'a été trouvé. Vérifier le câble ?"

Do you know why?

Please try
Mode: Managed (!)
Network name (SSID): Specified: observatoire-portail
Key "empty"

# ifup eth1

What shows

# iwconfig eth1

Thanks a lot.
