gdm is most useful for runlevel 5. You don't *HAVE* to use this: you can log in at the console or other windows and use "startx" to start your X session. The big question is, what *else* did you leave out in doing a basic installation? xauth? xterm? Firefox? OpenOffice? Emacs with X capibility, rather than emacs-nox? I'll urge you to take a look at "yum list" and pick out application syou want, and pre-install them.
