There is also a project by the gnome do guys called "docky" which seems to be pretty slick. I remember trying out AWN when it was released a while ago and thought it was buggy, but I bet it's gotten much better since then :) (p.s. Gnome-do and synapse are an awesome way to start applications - super fast!)
