I've had good luck with partimage from the system rescue cd. Seemed
simpler than clonezilla, at least it was to me some time back.
Scriptable too. Per clonzilla's home page, Clonezilla uses Partclone
(default) or Partimage to make backups.
In my script, it boils down to:
partimage --batch --compress=0 --nodesc --finish=3 --volume=0 save $part
${part##*/}-$today.partimg
