This looks like a Scientific Linux package building issue that perhaps Pat 
Riehecky or similar could have a look at.  Again, CentOS does not have the 
issue.

I highly doubt python.x86_64 properly "requires" expat.i686, which is probably 
why you didn't have it installed.

Try:  yum remove expat.i686 and see if it tries to pull out python. :-)  I 
happen to have it for other reasons (fat desktop install)
