So if your network supported multicast and you had say a bunch of different stations they could all get the same stream without the linear growth of traffic. Multicast was all the thing in the mid 1990's with universities and such looking at if for their remote learning and entertainment looking to use it for movies and such. The problem is that multicast has all kinds of corner cases which sidelined it because it tended to take out top level routers.
