Wonder how many people left who'll still feel genuinely sad about this? In an age when most people don't get the historical significance of a Scottish engineer, I dare so not as many as I'd like. I will miss Doohan, the Canadian with the decent Scottish accent. How memorable were his life-saving last minute fixes, phasers recharged in the nick of time, warp engines online just before disaster strikes, shields holding past the normal failure point, transporters doing there thing and saving Kirk's butt over and over. Nothing was funnier than Scotty cursing in his "native" tongue, or his well-known estimates for repair times that he always managed to beat (and thus secure his role, as he said, as a "miracle worker"). Doohan's was an endearing and enduring character from a show that has become a part of American culture, and he was an important contributor to that phenomenon.
He will be missed. May you be blessed on your newest voyage, Scotty. 'Star Trek's' Scotty, James Doohan, dead at 85 19 minutes ago Actor James Doohan, best known as Scotty, the feisty, Scottish-accented chief engineer on television's original "Star Trek" series, died on Wednesday at his home in Redmond, Washington, his manager said. He was 85. Doohan, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease last summer, died of complications from that degenerative illness and pneumonia, Steve Stevens told Reuters. A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Doohan was a prolific voice actor on Canadian radio before making his move into television in the 1950s. But he will be remembered for playing Lt. Commander Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, the can-do chief engineer aboard the starship USS Enterprise on the original "Star Trek" series, which ran from 1966-69 on NBC. He reprised the role for several big-screen "Star Trek" features. One of his character's chief functions on the show was to operate the transporter used to "beam" crew members to and from the Enterprise -- often in response to an order that entered the pop culture as the catch phrase "Beam me up Scotty." Doohan's last public appearance was in October, when he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Reuters/VNU [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo!
