I have inserted a few comments on things you have said because it was quicker
than doing it the long way...Astro the Lazy...

It has been my OTHER passion for years! My dad served, literally (the white
officers), on the USS Colorado during WWII. He told me some things, but he
doesn't talk about it much...
The US Navy was the last of the armed services to give up on their
prejudices...this does not surprise me...the family of Dory Miller is still
waiting for them to change theior mind and give him his Medal Of Honor...

It was my dad who introduced me to Science Fiction. He's a wise man, and I
was always angry that the white folks took away his ability to really use
his intellect to the fullest. Long story...

Long story, long list of storytellers, sir...

There is so MUCH about Blacks in the military that hasn't been told!

Which is why I would love to get someone out there who could tell them before
they die off...

When I read Heinlein's 'Starship Troopers, I was rudely awakened to how much
I assumed the future was full of whites, basically. At the end of the book,
after I had pictured this tall, white, probably blond guy as the center of
the Marines, Heinlein described him as a Filipino!

You should have seen the look on my face when the movie showed this blonde
haired, blue eyed 'Fillipino' (I would have been happier with Lou Diamond
Phillips!) Plus an honorable mention to Time Trax who tried to show us that
same type of future...

THAT slapped me in the face with how the insidious racial assumptions had
gotten to me. I never forgot that. Maybe that's why I was so GLAD I
stumbled onto Octavia Butler's books. And of course, the people in this
group.

You guys and ladies are awesome! I don't read everything, nor do I
participate in many discussions. That's because it's very satisfying to
read about published writers here, and about looks into the future that
include us. And it's amusing to see that there are some folks who are
surprised and indignant about the treatment of minorities in SF and the
world in general. Don't get me wrong...I love the indignation. It's fresh!

See, guys like me will never be able to completely shed the scars of race
hatred and mal-treatment. This includes the lingering self-doubts from
years of taking crap without realizing that whatever they were blaming us
for was not of our making. And I'm jaded. Nothing surprises me any more.

It takes a new generation that hasn't been through the same crap to do
better. So I'm glad that most of the people in our group haven't
experienced raw race hatred. I have, and there are times...well, I'll leave
it at that. Suffice it to say that I sometimes overreact to things that don't
affect younger people the same way.

'nuff said... :o)

I'm flattered to be considered a younger person...Thank you!

Maurice

I never ran across so many people who had an interest in blacks in the
military in one spot outside the military or VA...Wow!

ordered it. Thanks!

'Bloods' was a book written about Black GIs is Viet Nam...

M C Jennings <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:A couple of books that I have:

The Road to Victory -- David P. Colley -- About the Red Ball Express in WWII

Benjamin O. Davis Jr.'s Autobiography. Some history about the Buffalo
Soldiers in the Philippines, too.

Brothers In Arms -- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar/Anthony Walton -- 761st Tank
Battalion in WWII

Blood for Dignity -- David P. Colley -- The first integrated Army unit since
the Revolutionary War. Fought in WWII. 5th Platoon, K Company, 394th
Regiment, 99th Division. Fought at the Remagen bridgehead in 1945.

The Forgotten Heroes -- Clinton Cox -- Story of the Buffalo Soldiers. They
also consisted if the 24th and 25th Infantry regiments, I believe...the 24th
served in Cuba in 1898.

The Right to Fight -- Gerald Astor -- A history of AAs in the military. 18
pages of amazing photographs, including Joe Louis in a color Guard, and Lena
Horne entertaining troops at a segregated base in Arizona...

Without knowing our history, we can't be sure that we're included in the
future...space, Science Fiction...anywhere...IMHO...
