I thought so, too, when I first heard the rumor. When they gave the role to Paul McGann, I had to look him up, because I'd never heard of him. Here in the States, they dug up almost every movie he'd ever been in and threw it on-air, trying to catch the wave. Still couldn't name a one of them if life and limb depended.
