I remember (along with a group of students) asking my high school for
permission to launch a student newspaper. We were ready to fund the thing
ourselves through donations and volunteer work and even had a faculty
sponsor lined up. This wasn't going to cost the school district a dime with
the exception of some electricity for use of an empty classroom.
Administration said no, not even with our own funding - it might distract
from football fundraising and compete for the same donors.

This is life in a jackassed Midwestern football town. What a waste.

Frakking fraktards.

Probably where I got this offbeat thing people call a sense of humor.

One of my best HS moments was my junior year, when about ten AP students and
I petitioned the county we lived in for a Latin class. We got the funding
over the summer, only to have it pulled a week later, without our knowledge,
for extra funding for the varsity football team. Each of us pulled aside a
football player who was being tutored in one subject or another, and told
them that, if they lost a single game that season, they'd fail miserably in
whatever class they were being tutored in. They almost pulled off an
undefeated season, lost the homecoming game by four. Talk about some scared
folk...
