Shatner Angry over Trek Snub
"It doesn't make sense," says original Kirk
by Orlando Parfitt, IGN UK

UK, November 23, 2007 - William Shatner won't be appearing in JJ Abrams
Star Trek reboot, and he's not happy about it. The 76-year old actor,
who played Captain Kirk in the original long-running sci-fi show, asked
the obvious question to Extra TV: "How could you not put one of the
founding figures into a movie that was being resurrected? That doesn't
make sense to me!"

He added: "I've become even more popular than I was playing Capt Kirk --
I'm good box office and I get publicity."

The actor, who's also had a singing career, did concede however that the
film will be a success without him: "They are going in a different
direction and it'll be a wonderful film."

It's not the first outburst from Shatner. Since he found out he wouldn't
be in the new Trek he's been complaining to several news organisations.
In a recent interview with The Associated Press, he reiterated that not
casting him "didn't seem to be a good business decision." He said: "I
have the popularity to ensure the movie has a good box office."

The fact Leonard Nimoy has been cast as Spock has only made Shatner's
pain more acute. "I'm not in the movie at all. Leonard, God bless his
heart, is in, but not me."

The plot details of Star Trek have been kept a closely guarded secret by
producers Paramount, but we do know the plot revolves around the early
adventures of the Enterprise crew. Chris Pines is the young Kirk while
Zachary Quinto is Spock.

The film is set for a winter 2008 release.
