No, back in the '60s when he created Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry wanted a black 
woman of African ancestry (she's Swahili). He was going to go with "Uhuru", but 
felt it was too difficult to pronounce, so changed the last vowel to an "a", 
and came up with "Uhura". Both names are nice, but "Uhuru" rolls off the tongue 
a little better to my mind
