forgot about that! Southern stereotypes are bad in the movie industry, that's
for sure!

Yea I have seen that. Remember that old James Bond movie with Roger Moore? I
think he was in Bangkok and they had the sheriff from Georgia on vacation.
Chewing tobacco and all. :)

That's funny! I've seen several Hong Kong movies where the bad guys are cliched
Americans with bad cliched American accents. Typically there's a Southerner or
Texan, complete with big cowboy hat, boots, and cigar in the case of the
latter. Jackie Chan's movies from the '90s--the ones that take place in
America--are loaded with those bad stereotypes and bad actors faking accents
badly.

Ever see Kingdom of Heaven? I watched the director's cut of this 3 hour epic.
There was a ethnically diverse cast but all of the main characters had english
accents. (Liam Neison, Orlando Bloom) The main characters were supposed to be
FRENCH. Only the bad guy had a French accent. Why didn't they?? I didn't know
that they were supposed to be French until I watched the making of the film!

I have seen some British films where the bad guy was either Russian or
American. Which gives an interesting twist to things. (can't think of any
examples though!)

And the frightening thing? I think you may be right!

You know, it'd be fun to put together a list of the number of movies in which
the star is from another country, and actually played by someone from another
country, instead of an American faking an accent. Usually the foreigners get
relegated to henchmen roles, or, get to play the bad guy in the movie. Foreign
accents always seem to work as villainous ones in movies--I wonder, do Russian
and British directors cast actors with fake American accents as their villains?

If they had a real russian then they would say that her accent was "too
russian". :)

Yeah, I get it, but I think Hollywood spends too much time trying to get "name"
stars in certain roles. Maggie Gyllenhaal, for example, was cast as the new
Rachel in "The Dark Knight". Did her casting really pull in anyone? Same for
Katie Holmes, who was in the news 'cause of the bizarre marriage to Tom Cruise.
Did having her really help the movie, past what the quality of the film itself
did to draw audiences? Indeed, in every amateur and professional critical
review of "Batman Begins", the one person cited as weak in the flick was
Holmes.
So I get it: Johannsen is considered hot, she has an old-school body that will
look good in a tight-fighting costume. But if the movie is good, the action is
good, and the story enjoyable, I contend they will do just as well with a
no-name Russian actress as they will from whatever upfront audience she pulls
in. Indeed, I'd say better, as a real Russian won't have to fake an accent.

Just one of my movie pet peeves...

They are going by popularity rating only. Hollywood is super formulaic. They
probably could have found 3 dozen from here, but Scarlet Johannsen has more
pull.

I guess it's just me, but I've never understood why they can't find actors from
the country their character calls home? There are no good, athletic Russian
actresses to play Widow?
