Then it's a step ahead of me, you are. As I said, I'm only looking for the rest of the family, and the free wi-fi isn't much for them, because they don't travel with their laptops as often as I do.

I can never convince myself the outlay of money is necessary, since I try to get free wifi at those coffee shops and such. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Martin Baxter" <truthseeker...@hotmail.com> To: "SciFiNoir2" <scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com> Sent: Friday, December 18, 2009 2:58:13 PM GMT -06:00 US/Canada Central Subject: RE: [scifinoir2] McDonald's Raises the Stakes, Again (free wireless) True. Have you gotten any mailings regarding Clear, the WiMax offering for our area? Every time I sit down to look into it online, the web site doesn't show up. I want to see the full pitch before I even consider committing (on my family's behalf, mind you, to get them out from under AT&T broadband). Couldn't help but think that the necessary stuff's already in place, and that five-year time span is simply the amount of time it'll take them to figure out how to get the most money out of the deal. You know I hate how the telecoms and politicians destroyed cities' plans to offer free wifi for its citizens? Stuff like this is a way to allow college kids and people with limited money to have Internet access. That's a good thing, especially if those business don't require you to buy anything. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mr. Worf" <hellomahog...@gmail.com> To: scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com Sent: Wednesday, December 16, 2009 6:36:27 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: [scifinoir2] McDonald's Raises the Stakes, Again (free wireless) http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2009/12/16/mcdonalds-raises-the-stakes-again.aspx McDonald's Raises the Stakes, Again By Rick Aristotle Munarriz December 16, 2009 | Comments (2) It won't be long before the sign reads "Billions and Billions of Web Pages Served" at your local McDonald's (NYSE: MCD). The world's leading restaurant chain is teaming up with Wi-Fi provider AT&T (NYSE: T) to offer free connectivity to customers in stateside stores come mid-January. It's about time. The thrifty fast-food chain behind the Dollar Menu deals was stiffing its patrons, charging them $2.95 for two hours of access. Slowly but surely, charging a premium for access is becoming a veto-sprouting liability. Starbucks (Nasdaq: SBUX) has learned the hard way, recently relaxing its access standards after several quarters of declining comps. McDonald's hasn't had a problem attracting crowds, but it's the buck-priced double cheeseburgers, parfaits, and breakfast sandwiches that have been winning over recessionary feasters. I can't recall ever seeing someone roll up sleeves, crack knuckles, and begin pecking away on a laptop inside a McDonald's, but that may change with the new policy. As the fast-food giant expands its premium beverages and upgrades its interiors to take on Starbucks, it's the right thing to do. The perceived value of connectivity has been plummeting anyway. Last month found the country's three leading search engines announcing pro bono access over the holidays. Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) teamed up with airport and hotel mobile ad network JiWire, offering free online access in exchange for a single search on Microsoft's Bing. Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) declared that it would be footing the bill to provide free Wi-Fi at 47 of the country's busiest airports between now and Jan. 15. Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) rolled out a free hotspot in New York City's Times Square that will remain in place for at least a year. -- Bringing diversity to perversity for over 9 years!
