I have uninstalled matplotlib and reinstalled 0.99.1.2 from the source
tarball at 
http://sourceforge.net/projects/matplotlib/files/matplotlib/matplotlib-0.99.1/
(I think
this is the same as I used previously) and I no longer see the
segfault... The build is now ongoing

I don't have gdb on this machine and I cannot install it from apt
unfortunately (not a sudoer...).

I really don't understand what happened.
