The selection may now be drawn translucently using the selection background colour with SCI_SETSELALPHA / SCI_GETSELALPHA. Markers have a translucency value set with SCI_MARKERSETALPHA which is used when the marker is drawn in the text area rather than the margin either because there is no margin for it to be drawn in or because it is a SC_MARK_BACKGROUND marker. SciTE has selection.alpha and bookmark.alpha settings to demonstrate this.
