Create a style with the visible facet off and then use that style for these characters. Non-visible text has not been thoroughly thought through and may not behave as you expect. For example, there will be caret positions on each side of the invisible character. You can experiment in SciTE using the deliberately undocumented "notvisible" style facet. The "notchangeable" facet may also be of interest. Trying to build something like a word processor out of this is going to be very frustrating and you should use a different base component.
