Aside from learning more about CellBuffer as I go along, my knowledge of Scintilla, in general, is very limited, so if you say it's not applicable, so be it, consider it withdrawn as a proposal.
One of the things to learn is that Scintilla uses a document view model where there can be multiple views on a document. SciTE doesn't support this, but for example, open a file in PythonWin, drag down the top divider to make two views on the same document and zoom into one. Much of the data in Scintilla is attached to the view and data structure changes need to be made understanding this.
