Todd Whiteman from ActiveState has contributed an implementation of a block caret for those that prefer this style of caret. Or want to emulate vi. There are new calls (SCI_SETCARETSTYLE / SCI_GETCARETSTYLE) to choose between CARETSTYLE_INVISIBLE, CARETSTYLE_LINE, and CARETSTYLE_BLOCK. The feature works well for alphabets commonly used for code (that is, ASCII works great) but has problems with complex languages like Thai where a base character and several accent characters may share horizontal space.
