I think it is a lot of work. I can't recall all the details but do remember that when implementing searching there were many infinite-loop bugs in the regular expression code that took a lot of work to fix. A major problem is in handling ^ and $ with the RE library treating these as start of text / end of text rather than start of line / end of line. There are also issues with allowing line ends to be any of \r, \n, or \r\n.
