I'll second the tensioner guess. My family has had three tensioners go on us
over the years. In two cases they would make squealing noises. One squealer
would get quiet when the motor warmed slightly, the other one squealed all
of the time. The third tensioner just seized, and snapped the belt.
It was easy to verify that these tensioners were bad by removing the tension
on them, and turning them by hand. The bad ones will feel notchy like there
are flat spots on the bearings (because there are), or you won't be able to
turn it at all.
Just a note, the bolt that holds the pulley to the tensioner assembly has
reverse threads on it (loosens by turning it clockwise).
