The tune dates from about the turn of the century; the words are by
Cliff Hanley, from the 1950s.  I think its use for the John Maclean
March predates the familiar version.

The oldest copy I've seen of it was in a Boys' Brigade pipe tune book
from about 1911 where the title was written more emphatically:

     Scotland, the Brave!!!

It's a great tune and people are far too apologetic about it.
