Back on topic now - I bought one of these PCI "hardware" modems from
Priceless today. Hardware my arse! They are based on the Conexant HCF
(that's Host Controlled F(something)) chip and are basically winmodems of
a different flavour. At least it presents an I/O address to the PCI bus
unlike the USR Winmodem that came in my Dell, and does seem to perform
better under Windows. Still since I asked the guy if it were a real
hardware modem that would run under LINUX and he said "What other sort of
hardware modem is there?" I'll be seeing if I can get my 24 quid back
tomorrow.
Anybody know of a good real hardware PCI modem at a decent price?
