Probably not the main problem, but you're version of X is old:

Also, what video card is in your Dell? Do:
cat /proc/pci|grep VGA
to find out. If that fails, do
cat /proc/pci|less
and hunt through for the details (q to quit). If that doesn't have enough
information, try:
SuperProbe
but not have anything important running at the same time :)
According to your X output, its trying to use an S3 driver, but not
finding any S3 cards:

which is the cause of the problem. If you genuinely have an S3 card, try a
newer version of X. If you don't, alter /etc/X11/X to reflect your card.
