Correct. If the webcam you use has kernel drivers, of course.
Until recently, Philips cams had binary-only drivers and so weren't
included in the main kernel. Lately, at least some Philips cams have
drivers in the normal kernel tree.
I forget the name of the software that I use to grab the data from the
cam, but there are a number of choices. Pretty much anything that
understands the v4l interface, I would expect!
