I just had a read at the manual and have been mucking about with fsck to no avail. I went on to use Partition Magic to format both my hard drives and re-format them to make sure they were okay but on one it makes noises and freezes the process momentarily sugessting a bad sector. At the moment I am formatting again and I will unplug that hard drive and try installing linux again. It is not much of a loss as I have only recently installed it and had only started to create files as apposed to read how tos and the like.

Is you CPU fan working ? After that, I'd check for faulty memory, especially cache memory; a kernel compile will give signal 11 errors if you have memory problems (though you may also get crashes as you describe).
