Is there a reason why you don't use one of the two existing computers as
the printserver / router (I'm really asking why you don't use the exisitng
Linux box for this)?

In addition to the complication of another PC, you would also need to fit a
distribution onto a 486 - if you want security (as a router / firewall)
you'll want the latest versions of everything but the cut down distro's
(e.g. from the Linux router project) tend to be slim on samba stuff c
compilers etc.

I'd recommend getting squid working and some sort of DNS caching working
for sharing internet access it really does improve the performance.
