I think I've nailed it. It seems that doing one of these two keeps it from crashing: echo 0 > /proc/sys/kernel/exec-shield or echo 1 > /proc/sys/vm/legacy_va_layout I realized that after booting the computer, I was able to start the framework on Qemu once, but on subsequent attempts it crashed -- even though I did the killall, restarted Scratchbox and scanned through all the processes to make sure nothing remained. So I looked into the memory protection settings of my kernel such as exec-shield, and it seems enabling the legacy virtual address layout does the trick. My impression is that this a Red Hat/Fedora specific problem.
