That was strictly a qemu related issue which hasn't been present for a while in the new qemu devkits.

However, there was a kernel version which had a clever security feature of not letting a regular user read /proc/sys/vm/mmap_min_addr.

When qemu cannot read the value, it assumes it's zero and havoc ensues.

In these cases the hack is still necessary, but the feature should've been removed from later kernel versions.
