I ran into this issue as well. I reproduce it with the following:
hardstatus string '%{= kG}[ %{G}%H %{g}][ %{=
kw}%?%-Lw%?%{r}(%{W}%n*%f%t%?(%u)
%?%{r})%{w}%?%+Lw%?%?%= %{g}][%{B} %m-%d %{W}%c %{g}]'
And removing the first %= also fixes the issue.
