JFTR: This happens at least in the clean target
Patching the Makefile to contain 4.2.1 instead of 4.2.0 solves the
issue for me.

It seems a pure tar ball issue, as the @VERSION@ is computed from
patchlevel.h during configure or autoconf time. Running autoreconf
with appropriate parameters may suffice for most cases, too.
