Follow-up Comment #1, bug #52248 (project screen):
I have just encountered this exact same issue. The symptoms are incredibly
mysterious.
This happens only with screen. Other tools (picocom, cu) do not enable
exclusive locking on the PTY, so they work ok. After connecting to the PTY
with screen, other tools stop working as well.
