Follow-up Comment #1, bug #47819 (group screen): Yes, it doesn't work properly. I have tested it on Debian 13.0, x86_64, glibc 2.41, screen 5.0.1. I have such .screenrc file:
hardstatus alwayslastline "%{= KW} %H [%`] %{= Kw}|%{-} %-Lw%{= bW}%n%f
%t%{-}%+Lw %=%C%a %Y-%M-%d"
caption always "%{= kw}%-w%{= BW}%n %t%{-}%+w my message is ended\^ now"
and the caption message is something like this:
0 bash my_message is endednow
However if I delete *\* character I see:
0 bash my_message is ended
That's a bug.
