I think the problem is:

infocmp screen | grep smso
        smkx=\E[?1h\E=, smso=\E[3m, smul=\E[4m, tbc=\E[3g,

                              ^ wrong

The standout mode in screen is \E[3m, which
is ansi sequence for italics.

Comparing terminal definitions of screen and xterm:

infocmp screen xterm | grep so:
        rmso: '\E[23m', '\E[27m'.
        smso: '\E[3m', '\E[7m'.

Screen should use '\E[7m' for smso and '\E[27m] fir rmso.
As workaround, you can run:

export TERM=xterm

inside your screen, or put "term xterm" into your .screenrc
configuration file.
