Hmmm, New stuff in the P4.
1. Hyper Pipelineing - The P4 Willamette Core uses a 20 Stage Pipeline,
compared to the 10 stage pipeline of the P3.
2. A new Rapid Execution Engine - In other words, the P4's two ALU's are
'double pumped', they run at twice the clock frequency of the rest of
the CPU.
3. An Execution Trace Cache - This is there to augment the CPU's L1 and
L2 cache, but instead of storing instructions in their encoded form, the
Trace Cache stores them in their decoded 'micro-op' form.
4. The P4 has several new instructions, introduced in SSE2 (Streaming
SIMD Extensions 2), (err, SiMD = Single Instruction Multiple Data).
5. 400MHz System (Front Side) Bus Speed
There's probably other stuff too - but one small note - right now, a P3
at 1GHz can outperform the P4 at 1.5GHz in a lot of areas, it's
important to remember that the P4 is a Future CPU - and it's strengths
will only show when Intel Switches to their 0.13 Micron production
process, starts to use Copper interconnects, and ramps the speed up over
2.5GHz, none of which is planned before the end of this year, leaving
plenty of time for AMD to steal the limelight again :)
