Grab your Phillips, it's... The Latest from The Screwdriver List! Happy 4th of July to all Screwdrivers: I need your help: I have a 1 Gig Thunderbird Athlon/Abit KT7 RAID 133 MHz system, with a NVIDIA 256 Bit GeForce 2 MX GPU graphics card. 512 MB RAM. Encouraged by having built my own system which zips at the speed of light, I built an identical system for my good lady, and went the extra mile and installed a DVD CD ROM in her system. The problem is that DVDs play for anywhere from five to thirty minutes in her PC, and then freeze. The screen freezes, the right mouse gets disabled, and the only choice is to Ctrl/Alt/Delete. Of course, the fun of the movie is totally taken away. No point restarting the movie as the same thing is going to happen again. I have checked up my Nvidia manual, as well as gone to their website and checked the GeForce 2 MX product page, and it seems to stand behind the DVD capability of their graphic card. It does however say Buffer 8-64MB, and the manual states "Support 32/64 MB SDR Video Memory (Optional)", whatever that (optional) means. I bought this card because PC World happened to list it as a "Best Buy", but that could have been due to PC World getting Nvidia advertisement orders in each issue. A PC buff (highly amateur) friend of mine told me he had similar problems with his DVD and it turned out that his graphics card did not have the requisite video memory, which he said should be a minimum of 16 MB for handling of DVDs. Can any Screwdriver friend out there tell me how to check whether my graphic card has enough video RAM (I went into the device manager, but couldn't get much info on these matters), whether the video memory can be increased in any way, or whether I need to change the whole card itself? Also, is the problem with the graphics card, or does it lie elsewhere? In case I need to change the card itself, can you suggest a good (not exorbitant) graphics card that handles DVDs. Also, in that case, any takers for my current graphics card which is practically new? I will part with it at half of what I paid for it, however, if you are a poor student who has a GPA of 3.0 plus, and is going to help wipe out world hunger, you can have it for free!
