There are a few issues I see when trying to use the GIMP in the colour workflow at work. The #1 issue is the CMYK support and CMS, of course. However, I find the UI /very/ clumsy, and I've been using the GIMP for longer than I have Photoshop. I also find it lacks realtime previews for a lot of even basic filters and effects, which can be a real slow-down. So while I find it handy and use it at home for my scanning and such, I just don't see it as useable for newspaper prepress yet. I'd love to be able to contribute to improving it, but have a lack of skills and time to do so that won't be going away any time soon. So I'd love to see a Photoshop port for Linux. Even were the GIMP to reach a point where it was quite capable in CMYK prepress, a linux Photoshop port would still be handy for document conversions, advanced image work, and to help calm people who say "but it doesn't run <insert app here>."
