Welcome, Craig. I have only been using Scribus for a short time, so I only have one data point to give you. I used Scribus to create a 32-page program for my barbershop chorus' show which included a lot of graphics and some text. I used a 1GHz iMac with 512 MB RAM with no problems.
Also, to help you get up to speed, you might want to check out http://www.scribus.net. There is an on-line users guide (http://146.87.55.6:82/documentation/topics.html) and a great tutorial, http://146.87.55.6:82/docs/index.html. The tutorial is a translation of the original French that was based on version 0.4.8. A lot has changed in the dialog boxes since then, so you'll have to adapt, but it will give you a good flavor for the capabilities of Scribus. If you know French, there are more tutorials based on version 1.something by the same person at http://www.yeccoe.org/docs/scribus/scribus.html. Good luck.
