Thanks for that, but I did go to that site. I used "migrate" to convert a colour wmf to svg, it took forever, and eventually presented me with a black-filled outline! Maybe the original file was faulty, but OOo Draw loads it OK.
Still as long as it's on the todo list, I'll continue with my big sledgehammer for now...
